His playing brings a new kinetic force, pushing the songs into more expansive and volatile territory. Yet Reality Red also shows Bitumen at their most melodic, with acoustic guitar appearing alongside the electric.Vocalist Kate Binning's lyrics inhabit that same shifting landscape. Characters emerge and disappear-fictional, imagined, observed and autobiographical-creating a world where the personal and the surreal sit side by side. Her voice moves through these characters with menace, desire and ambiguity, giving Reality Red it's particular sense of tension and unease.Reality Red finds Bitumen stretching beyond the confines of post-punk without abandoning the darkness that brought them there.
