Spanish Love Songs
“A Brief Intermission in the Flattering of Time”
Genre: Rock
Drenched in dreamy, warm, upbeat synth and supported by an all-star lineup of features (Tigers Jaw, Illuminati Hotties, Kevin Devine, and The Wonder Years), Spanish Love Songs’ newest project, the fourteen minute, four-track EP “A Brief Intermission in the Flattering of Time,” is comforting and deeply rooted in both 80s synthwave nostalgia and 2000s emo sensibilities. Short in length but mighty in emotion, the EP feels like a companion piece to life’s small crises and quiet victories.
As the EP floats through its stylistic shifts, it opens with “Lifers Too,” where bright, punchy synths create a sense of forward motion and cautious optimism. Track two, “Cocaine & Lexapro,” moves into something tender and dreamlike, carried by soft layered instrumentation and a beautifully matched duet between Dylan Slocum and Kevin Devine. The hopeful lyric “A problem’s not a problem till you call it by name” lands like a quiet revelation. “Heavenhead,” the most pop-rock leaning track on the EP, leans into guitar-driven energy while maintaining the band’s emotional sharpness. The EP closes with “Berlin,” which pulls everything back into a warm, slow-burning glow. It's a gentle, cinematic ending that ties together the project’s themes of reflection, growth, and cautious hope.
Spanish Love Songs doesn’t shift their sound dramatically here, but the EP’s comforting lyrics, catchy melodies, and standout guest features make it a cohesive and emotionally satisfying listen.
Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
Recommended Track:
“Cocaine & Lexapro” is a lyrically gut-wrenching standout, softened by delicate guitar licks, a glorious tambourine fill, and pure heart from both Dylan Slocum and Kevin Devine.
